From the heated debates in the aula of St. Peter’s Basilica—Cardinal Ottaviani thundering about authority, Cardinal Suenens calling for a vision of the People of God, Bishop De Smedt pleading for humility—to the dramatic vote on whether Mary should have her own schema, Lumen Gentium was born in fire.
